Individualized Career & Academic Plan (ICAP)

ICAP is a multi-year process that intentionally guides students and families in the exploration of career, academic and postsecondary opportunities. With the support of adults, students develop the awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and skills to create their own meaningful and powerful pathways to Postsecondary and Workforce Readiness (PWR).

Each year at Manning, students have the opportunity to explore different careers and career pathways as well as develop an academic plan for after high school using Naviance.  Through the Naviance platform, a classroom lesson, and the guidance of a counselor, students identify their strengths, preferred activities, academic strengths, and skills to investigate careers and create postsecondary goals.

Incoming 6th graders take the "Strengths Explorer" survey and learn about their top three strongest emerging talents.

Seventh graders completed the "Career Key" survey and discovered their top Holland Traits (Conventional, Realistic, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Investigative). From there they explore all kinds of careers that are a good match for their specific top traits.  The ICAP lesson is taught in conjunction with the 7th grade social studies unit about personal finance.

Eighth graders learned about the Colorado Career Cluster Model, then completed the "Career Cluster Finder" survey. Based on their results, they could explore potential jobs, careers, and options that might be a good fit for them.  The ICAP lesson is taught along with an introduction to Warren Tech and is followed by the Warren Tech Middle school tour.

Please ask your children about their survey results and the career opportunities they discovered. Your student can log in to Naviance (through Clever.com) and share the careers and interests they discovered.

When students complete a meaningful ICAP process, they:

  • Connect the relevance of education to future aspirations.
  • Are more motivated to attend school and stay engaged.
  • Become confident learners who can actively set goals.
  • Make secondary and postsecondary course plans to pursue career and life goals.
  • Are able to articulate their transferable skills and apply knowledge about how their actions today connect with their goals.
