National Junior Honor Society
National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) gives students an opportunity to walk a leadership path that challenges them to learn about and understand the values of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. We think this knowledge and these skills help you become well-rounded student leaders in your school, community, and beyond.

NJHS Coordinator

Kari Jacobsen-Laniel
Hello! My name is Kari Laniel. (Kari like “carry” and Laniel like “Daniel” with an “L”.) My legal last name is Jacobsen-Laniel, so I am often difficult to find in an email search. Sorry for that! This year I will be teaching 7th grade Social Studies/World Area Studies, Speech & Debate, as well as the NJHS Coordinator.
My wonderful husband and I got married in 2008. He is an account manager for an insurance brokerage called Marsh McLennan and he enjoys playing golf and brewing his own beer. We live in Congress Park in Denver with our aging, perfect dog, Baxter, and our “fluffy” 20-pound cat, Waffles. We love our downtown Denver neighborhood and have been since 2006. I grew up in Evergreen, Colorado and graduated from Evergreen High School. My parents still live “up the hill” and I love everything about the mountains and mountain life. I am an avid Broncos fan even though it is really a love/hate relationship! I love reading, writing, knitting, photography, spoiling my nieces and nephews and I will never turn down an iced coffee.
I started teaching in 2007 and teaching is my third career. I was in the field of social work for many years as well as retail. I went back to school in my mid-30s to get my teaching license and chose to teach middle school. Yes, I chose to be with this crazy group of kids, and I love it!
I started at Manning in 2021. Throughout my career, I’ve taught ELA and ELA electives for all grades, and 7th-grade Social Studies. My favorite, by far, is traveling the world with 7th graders! I believe we study how the world was, so we better understand our place in the world today. Let the adventure begin!
